Draw this again - Sea of Dreams by Gabbi Draw this again - Sea of Dreams by Gabbi
Old (2008):
New (2012):

And here I thought that I hadn't made much improvement since 2008. I'm kind of blown away at the moment! XD
I'm so proud of myself!

This "draw it again" challange has really showed me that all my hard work with my art has payed off!

Not only do I see a difference in anatomy, colours and shading, but also in composition and "life" in the drawing itself.
I've also gotten a bit better at backgrounds, even though I'm still working on that, haha! XD

When I drew "The Sea of Dream" back in 2008 I was very proud of it. That's why I chose that one to draw again. It's always easier to redraw an illustration that you never put much work into. And as I said, I really wanted to challange myself with this! :la:

I'm still very much in love with the giraffe/Lapras hybrid and the green elephant king!
I pushed myself to my limit and I'm very pleased with myself at the moment, haha :XD:

Edit: Semifinal? Oh my... O.O Thank you so much! I'm very honored!

I also find it interesting that so many seem to like the older version better, haha! :XD: I kind of knew it was coming, because it's quite usual in these sort of things. I guess that in the end it's a lot about style.

My style in 2008 were very mainstream, and my biggest artistic influences at that time were Naruto and Prince of Tennis (That I know a LOT of people enjoy). It's a simple style that I know that many can take to heart. ^^

Though that wasn't really the style I wanted. I knew in my heart that I wanted something different, and more my own...
So I started experimenting with style. Looked at a lot of illustrators that I liked, and now, 4 years later....
I have finally started to like my style. It's a style like this that I wanted in 2008 but just couldn't do properly then.

Something a bit more unique and that feels more like me.

Thank you for your comments! ^^

I know this is pretty old now but... I'm kind of amazed by the amount of people who prefer the older one.

I mean it's really obvious how the perspective, composition, movement, depth, colouring, shading, and anatomy have all improved vastly. The older one is very washed out and somewhat static while the newest is vibrant with great depth and interesting perspective.

I think the people who prefer the older one, prefer it because it's more 'anime' in style. That's the only reason I can think of anyway.

Thank you
That means so much to me, because I almost started thinking that people were right about the old one being better.
Even though I know that the new one has better composition, colouring etc.

People seem to care more about the style (which is not the focus here), and I agree with you that most people probably like the old one because it has a more mainstream anime style.
I like my current style better though, because it feels more like my own. ^^

Thank you very much for the sweet comment!

I absolutely ove qualities of both of them. Your anatomy and style in the first one is more appealing to the eyes, but then again, the second one is different, unique, and nice as well. You shading in the second one is much better than it previously was. c:

I love the colors and shading of the second one, although I do still like the anatomy and overall appearance of the first one :)

Either way, I like change, especially when it pleases the artist.

I have to admit the characters in the older version seem to be that bit more cute, that said your newer version is still cute and really shows the development of your shading and the choice of colors are much more vibrant. congrats on being a semifinalist!

O_O I don't really see so much difference..
the drawing was good before ,and it's good now... I will be sincere ,I even prefer the old one and I can assure u that I see drawing where people really made an improvement in their art...
a bit confused about the way they choose the finalists..

I think your out of your place making such comments especially criticism that was not constructive but more of a gripe about your opinion of the contest not being fair, the fact you commented you cant see much difference means you need to go to specsavers! Take another look at the clouds in the images above and tell me there is no improvement and that is only 1 of many things I could point out.
I have looked at your example of what you think should have been a finalist, and to me the only real difference is the style of art, both artists have significantly improved there skills in shading use of color and in the case above also the composition of the piece, which might have been a deciding factor, having seen both entries if I were a judge (thank the stars I'm not) I would have picked this.
I understand this site can be annoying around art not being chosen for a contest or a group, I myself submitted my current deviantID to :icondigital-artists: it took me well over a week to make and it was rejected yet a piece that was accepted in the same week was a 2 color gradient background with the text (in Ariel I might add) that said "Pedophilia, Porn & Piracy - what the internet was made for" if that piece took more than 1 minute to make I would be astounded not to mention the despicable opinion of the artist that submitted it. So yes sometimes it can seem unfair of who gets picked to those who don't but hey that's life!

we are free to talk, and if someone joins a contest needs to accept that he/she will be judged..
it was my opinion and I explained it giving my example, after u can think different than me, like a lots will think different than u. The world is nice 'cause it's not always the same.I was not offending nobody, I didn't say the drawing was bad or stuff like that, I just think, and i can assure u, I'm not the only one ( I read so many journals about it ) that some drawings that was not taken were better than many who finish in the final that's all.
In any case , I'm not interesting to have a polemic about it.
So good luck to this girl, and I hope will win the best. bye

I fully understand you are free to talk but can you understand its very harsh to comment that you can't see any improvement when there clearly is a substantial improvement.
All I can say is that when I went to the "draw this again" semi-finalist page to check out who got through, the first image I looked at was this, and its not really my fave style but it caught my eye over the rest of the pieces there.

Different persons like different styles. That's okay, and if you like my older work better than my knew it's all fine with me. :D
I appreciate your feedback, but telling me that I haven't made improvement, I can't agree with. ^__^
I know that I have made improvement during the years, in all kinds of things like anatomy, composition, shading and colour understanding. My 'Improvement Meme' can show that; [link]

Improvement is a difficult thing to judge, because it works different for everyone.

me I don't think u don't improve, surely u do it, but not in a way that makes me say " damn, this girl make really a big improvement!" I don't want to offend u but I really saw drawings about people who make big steps ahead and they are not even taking in consideration, I read a lots of comment about people who think totally the same of me so I think that deviant would say why it choose some works instead of other and give us the right reasons. Cause like a lots of people said, look like they choose randoom and that it wouldn't be fair for the people who join the contest, neither for u.

if u wanna know about what i'm talkng watch this drawing and tell me if it was not deserving to be in the finalist...

[link]

and before u say something it 's not a friend, in fact it's nothing I just saw this drawing and I think that it changed so much.
Don't take it bad, I like ur drawing, I told it to u like I would say it to anyone else.

Many of my own favorites didn't make it to the semifinals, but I'm not the judge here.
I know you didn't mean to offent me in any way, but coming to my deviantion and more or less tell me that I don't deserve to be a semifinalist (not enough improvement etc) is very hurtful.

I am not the one who decided on the semifinalists, so I don't really understand what you want to gain when you say others have made more improvement then me?

I don't want to gain nothing, I just wrote it in ur page like I would write this comment in another page of someone who went to the finalists without really deserving it (if compared with other people who did better, not in general)and u don't need to be hurtful, u joyned a contest where normally you need to be judged, so don't take it bad the critics if they come, it's what normally happens when u put urself inside a challenge. But u are right, maybe was better to make notice this stuff to deviant in a different way, ad most of all in a different place. I apologize.
good night
