I get a lot of questions on how to go about improving your drawing ability. I never really know how to answer them since every artist I've met seems to grow better under different conditions. For example, my friend ~Dana-T (https://www.deviantart.com/dana-t) has completed over one hundred sketchbooks in the past four years. I've completed four in the same amount of time, but our trends of improvement are (kinda) similar because we learn in different ways.
One of the reasons I never end up making a tutorial is basically because I don't think they work. Plenty of people will disagree with me on this, but that's my honest opinion. There might be a lot of opinions I type out h
So, I was drawing at work yesterday (I'm now at WB btw, yay!), when I just looked down, startled, and thought, "This is what I wanted it to look like." I suddenly couldn't fathom how that had happened. Like I don't remember when I got to the point where someone tells me their idea, then I'm able to sit down and just MAKE THAT THING. I remember being someone who couldn't figure out how to do that, and I acknowledge being the me I am now, but where were the two bridged and when did I cross? This whole week has kind of been like that - me thinking about the person I was when I joined this site and the person I am today.

Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 3
And now for the dramatic conclusion to the epic trilogy. Heroes will rise, bad habits will fall, in this last chapter we'll discuss how to focus your efforts and learn the most and improve quickly with your studies. If you missed them, click these links for Part One and Part Two. And now for...
WISDOM NUMBER THREE!!! Work smart and leave your comfort zone. This part is my qualifier for art school, tutorials, and educational resources in general, because they can be good, but only if you make them good. Once you've gotten in to the habit of drawing consistently, it's important to start being mindful of what you're drawing, how you're drawing

Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 2
Here's the continuation of yesterday's journal discussing the importance of hard work. If you missed it, click here!
In part two I'm gonna talk about one of the biggest roadblocks I hear from artists who are having difficulty getting in to good study habits, so without further ado...
WISDOM NUMBER TWO!! Don't wait for perfect weather and stop making excuses. So often I hear things like "I don't want to waste paper" or "I don't know what to draw" or "I haven't found a good tutorial" or "I don't want to study perspective" or any number of things along those lines. I'll be blunt and just put the answer out there now: get over it. If you want t

Advice for Aspiring Artists Pt. 1
So this has been on my mind a bit lately and I was just struck with the sudden urge to write about it. It's a bit long so I've broken it in to three parts, but if you're a beginning artist I would recommend reading through it, it might just get you aimed in the right direction. :)
This started a couple days ago when I was trolling facebook and someone had posted some artwork, and one of the comments was something along the lines of "Nice! What tutorial did you use for this?" which prompted an immediate and violent facedesk on my part. I hear things like this all the time and would like to help dispel some myths about learning art; so after 9
PLEASE NOTE: Tags are in limited Beta release and not all Beta Testers have access to this feature at this time.
You’ve been hearing a lot about tags in the past few months, and we’re happy to announce that they’ve just been fully released to Beta Testers.
Tags create landing pages around topics — making it easier to discover related artwork, bringing together artists and art appreciators, and forming communities around common interests. As deviantART grows and creates new ways to discover great content, we believe tags will play an important role in better surfacing artwork.

The Timeline of deviantART
In 2014, DeviantArt turned 14 years old. Fourteen years is a long time, some of you reading this may be younger than that. I've gathered some historical information with the help of moonbeam13 (https://www.deviantart.com/moonbeam13) and some members of the Community Relations team to help enlighten those of you who have joined in recent years and missed out on a chunk of DeviantArt's life.
I hope you enjoy taking a step back in time!
Please note: it is extremely difficult to track down some events in DeviantArt's history (in particular, the first few years) and that some dates are only approximate.
